Poem: Double the Fun! – 21/08/20

    It’s your birthday tomorrow,
I awake up from a nap
    and there are two cakes,
    one in your favourite flavour,
    and one in mine.
    I only suggested,
    never insisted.
Never knew there would be two.
Perhaps there’s going to be two separate celebrations,
aren’t you a special one, I smile: this we already knew.

One for us, our immediate family,
then one for the remaining –
my two far-off brothers, currently our ‘extended’ family,
it’ll be nice, actually, to watch your eyes shine,
    complemented by the candle lights,
to giggle and understand that you’re having twice the time!

The mud cake is all yours,
    you can have the richness,
    it suits you,
and the sickeningly sweet salted caramel can be for us three,
    but mainly for later,
perhaps sneaked in for you and me.

    Advanced happy birthday,
I hope you have a wonderful time,
    blowing all those candles out!
Celebrating, amazing, I will proudly watch your joyfulness thrive.

    Prose Poetry: It’s Your Birthday! – 07/04/20

Oh, a time for celebration! Your birthday while in isolation. There can only be us three, but that’s enough for you to see, that you are appreciated still, and you are deserving of the love you need. You are often quiet, you do not seek attention much, indeed, you are a hard worker of the household, our family, and you go about your tasks with a sense of careful meticulous duty.

But today you will allow me to hug you, to repeatedly kiss you upon the top of your head, when all other times I reach to embrace you, I am kept at arm’s length. There is something about affection that must make you squirm inside, but perhaps the fact I counted down the hours to midnight, to your birthday, showed that I care, it made you realise. Of course we love you, and of course we will always care, you are the masculine figure we always have to observe, to follow directives, to feel your care and quiet concern when it is required, when danger is near, you are the one to help pick up the pieces, you are always near.

And today is your day, let us celebrate it with a bang! Your presents gleefully given, one artistically made with a careful hand. And the others are so sweet that they could make your stomach curl, you delight in these gifts, for you rarely consume them at will. And now I spend extra time with you, when usually you are permitted your own space. I thought you liked it like this, but now, I realise, that sometimes you might enjoy my company, to have a quiet observer nearby to watch television with, perhaps here I am accepted as another.

And now it is time for cake, and we three celebrate, Mother’s been at work all day, and you are delighting in posing before the cake playfully, cheekily, unlike how you would act normally. I smile to myself, even those you are being so silly, because I know that you are enjoying yourself, this moment is one of today’s many. So, my precious Father, I hope you enjoyed your day, allow us to share in our love and appreciation for you each and every other day, always.

  • Story example: Sheila the Bear’s 2nd Birthday – 19/07/19

    Story example: Sheila the Bear’s 2nd Birthday – 19/07/19

Sheila was delighted: her birthday had arrived!

The day had arrived! A beary happy birthday for Sheila indeed, today was her second birthday, she’d been counting down the days for the last three weeks. She could barely remember her last birthday, she was just that bit too young, but her Mama and Papa bear assured her that today would be such utter fun.

She had invited her class of thirty bears, squirrels, rabbits and other animals, to a spectacular party set up outside in the woods, where there was a fairground set up, with dodgem cars, spinning rides, even an inflatable bouncing castle exploration with many side and front rooms.

With glee, Shiela had laid her eyes upon her birthday party surprise, her parents had kept the set up a secret from her, and rushing over to the dodgems she began to settle herself into the one and only pink princess car. She drove around while waiting for her friends’ imminent arrival, she was a fierce racer it seemed, the extra practice she was getting in would surely result in the beating of the other teams!

When the guests arrived, they had a grand old time with the fairground of her special day, the only problem though was all the animals could not use the inflatable castle today. Why not? It is enough to answer, the claws of her class of creatures were too sharp and punctured the castle with multiple holes. It was a downright shame as the castle was merely a hire for the day, not owned by them and surely worth thousands of dollars, how Shiela’s parents groaned.

But it was her special day and nothing would allow their daughter’s happiness to come undone, lovely Mama Bear and Papa Bear distracted them all from disappointment with a lilting song.

“Come for the honey, come for the oats, come for the cupcakes, come for the fairy bread and marmalade toast! Allow us all to eat, young ones!” With a smile they led the animals inside, where Shiela’s massive birthday cake awaited them all, causing great widened smiles and tummies rumbling inside.

Despite the puncturing of the castle the day was deemed a great success, for this would be a very special day for Shiela for remember, many memories of the day, she felt extremely blessed.
