collaboration: the sea-faring page and the empress – Braeden Kennedy and Lauren M. Hancock – 19/03/22

Thank you so much to my good friend and fellow Melbourne creative, Braeden Kennedy (@bak_doodlin_away) on Instagram) for drawing this amazing piece of art for me to set a poem to.

I am powerful, he affirms himself
    creative, talented,
    incredible, and different,
    the cool sea-blue surrounding his
    heart, mind, and soul,
    cerulean blue, seascape days
    calms him as he
calls upon the sign of the angels
    exhibited by the sun’s rays.
    warmed by their love
    their guidance from up above,
    he basks in their glory
and feels the connection from outside
    and deep within,
it will last, he tells himself,
a cruel voice sniggers from afar –
    “if only, you think…”
    manipulations from the other side
    another world perhaps
    alternative rides,
taking a ride on the train
    with these characters,
    he won’t forget,
    their words often
    harsh, grating, snide.
one, passes, thrusts a handful of
    tarot cards before him,
apparently he’s a seafaring page and
    she the empress?
    he shan’t grow unfocused,
with his art, he won’t digress
    with his guiding spirit
    he soars away from
    the clownfish and the sea
    the mermaids,
    the distractions,
the memories which do not please,
    and from within
    he calls again to angels
to allow his creativity to breathe…

    water, our life force,
as important as the air we breathe,
value this we must, nurture it, cherish it,
    we do, shall, see?

    water,
an elemental force, her importance, we heed,
    countering roaring fires,
hydrogen and oxygen calm, in part,
    but citizens harrowed and tired,
    fled and flee,

    forget these moments?
    never,

    we shall not,
    smoke lingering on the breeze.

we as a nation banded together,
    and of elements,
    fire, earth, wind, water,
    we encountered and employed them,
to ignore the strength of these,
    alone or together,
    we’d be ignorant,
    and repeated recollection –
    nightmarish,
    awakening, split seams.

    then the stagnant life
    where we were hidden away
    socialisation limited for our needs,
    closed work spaces,
    many months of solitude,
    from society, away, away!

    now, no major flames
or tempests fanning another destructive force,
    no fire-forced movement – “Hades”,
    pentacle, downward swipe,
    instead again, lives lost,
pictures, memories, animals, remembrances of families,
    destructed homes,
    now lakes and rivers overflow…
when shall we be saved, when will we know?

but there’s fluidity and a resilience within us all
natural disasters will not keep us down
we, Australians, are strong and homegrown
    brave and true, working together
    we save each other
    we rise up with others

for bold is our connection with Mother Earth
we respect her, we revere her, we are in awe of her
    its power, her mighty force
    for the power she provides
and the strength and cruelty with which
    she can decimate,
be present, or run and hide.

like silken thread we ride her waves
    undulating untamed like the dingo
    and his friend ray
the flames they’re battered by winds
    but we stay true,
together, united, resilience sees us through.

Spoken Word Poetry Collaboration: Implore – by Navin Manik and Lauren M. Hancock – 29/11/21

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with my dear friend, Navin Manik, of Navin’s Poetry to write and record together a piece together. Please visit his site for his amazing spoken word and poetry. There you will find soulful, striking, deep words from his very soul recorded, performed and shared.

We sincerely hope you enjoy our poetry project, Implore.

    Implore

    The breaths I take
    The steps I sway
When I dance on my feet
    My ground is change

    The heights I stare
    The case is space
    The light has shades
    The dark isn’t just pain

    I see the sane
    When I saw the chain
    I tear the deep
    When I drop the waves

    The colours I blend
    The Universe I paint
    The eyes then glare
    The divine through pen

    I expand upon
    an inner sense
    of personal justice
    social soul well meant

    I know I know
    the ability for
    personal growth

    is well rooted deep within,
    for every passing second
    my efforts are tirelessly sown,

    my chest expands
    my heart, it flows
    rich with breath, mighty effort
    stallion-like strength –
    continuous insistence,
    and sound temperament.

    our steps in time
    pirouetting groundwork
    yours and mine

    our knowledge together
    brought closely in life
    we stare down the precipice
    and soar, divine,

    unknowingly yet aware
    we become entwined
    intent and more
    this World we explore

    for reaching our Universe’s heights
    sights and sounds
    enriching our abilities
    our minds implore.

  • Poetry Collaboration by Amber and Lauren M. Hancock – Chrysalis of Hope – 16/08/21

Poetry Collaboration by Amber and Lauren M. Hancock – Chrysalis of Hope – 16/08/21

Nestled in the womb of creation,
    perils face the existence of human civilisation;
    birthing much chaos and delirium,

    unknowingly, we settle in,
unaware of what our future both promises
    and what it may bring,

    ever-open hands reach for warmth
    outside our hollows,
    to worldly next-of-kin.

Hope bears feathers, perched in soul,
    humming a frequency beyond words;
the eternal cacophony gifting gold from the unknowns,

    upon this hope we glide,
and then, as though, now sliding into
    pirouettes with symphonic style,

the treasure bears more than we believed
    able to be delivered,
let us adore these with calming eyes,

ecstatic hands, while feathers drift, softly land,
vivid types of wisdom only known to
    enlightened woman and man.

    The imprinted consciousness
    upon the soothed clean conscience
    of our astral journeying pillows

    embodies the archaic knowledge
    of the ancients whose remedies
    and generational lineage lays

    patiently in hibernation for the
pivotal metamorphosis of the spiritual development
of man amongst turmoil of the cyclical yugas.

    In chrysalis, we lay,
pods enclosed with passion, with verve,
    growing, minutely, each passing day,

    fragments becoming whole,
engorging ourselves, we know that when
we enlarge our intentions, and mend and heave hearts,

there is no matter in internalising
    this primordial knowledge
other than understanding we are coming to a close,

    and still the beginnings, unknown,
our subconscious thread speaks of moments,
instances, which enlighten even if we do not fully attend,

but it is with innate knowing,
    with peace and passion,
that hopefulness and truth breathe as a whole.
